Atheist and Humanist Baby Names

We noticed a few requests on the internet for Atheist baby names so we have created this post. All of the following possibilities are names that we have recorded into names in the English -Speaking world. They range in date from the 16th to 21st centuries. Many Atheists however would be happy to just use any name based on it’s sound without worrying about what it means. Just as giving a child a “Christian” “Hindu” “Jewish” name etc is no guarantee that the child will show life-long adherence to that Faith there is no reason to think an Atheist name = an Atheist life! We have previously published lists of Biblical names for both boys and girls.

For Girls: Atea  (Spanish for Atheist)  Athee (French for Atheist)  Atheist  Darwin (after evolution scientist Charles Darwin)  Darwina (based upon the previous)  Dawn (in hope of a new era)  Evolution  Hope (spiritual but not Theistic)  Nothea (intentended to be read as no thea. Thea means believer)

For Boys: Atheist  Charles-Darwin  and  Darwin  (see above- by far the most common Atheist name)  Enlightenment  Evolution  Godless  Pagan (used in the old-fashioned sense of just “non-baptised”)

Modern Hispanic American Girls’ Names

We have recorded all of these in the last two years. Some have been recorded only the once others many times. Of course many Hispanic Americans simply use English language names for their children. The scope for English speakers to make use of Spanish names has so far been underappreciated. It’s best to ask  someone in the know how to pronounce these names as it may not be as you think. Spellings can always be altered to make pronounciation easier for non-native speakers.

*Some of the names below are not traditional Spanish names but modern inventions by parents*

Long Baby Girl Names

The following are all names we have recorded between the 18th century and today across the English-Speaking world. All are at least four syllables long. This is just a selection of the many such names that we have. More will be posted at a later date, as will some long boys names. Such names can have a sophisticated air to them, although too complex names can be a spelling or pronounciation headache for others. For contrast see our several posts on very short baby names published last year. Copyright protected.
